I was up late last night, so late that I’m not even certain that I got to sleep. Skobath snored on my pillow, her deep even breathing rumbling in a way that reminded me of heavy trucks driving down the road.
I stared at the ceiling and waited for sleep to take me… but, it never did.
I walked to the big picture window and gazed at the moonlit yard – the forest shone with an unseen light source and I swear I could smell the rich, loamy scent of the leaf-strewn forest floor.
I saw a small figure move through the trees – so small and fragile looking – child-sized.
Staring at the tree-line was becoming a habit and I knew what every townsperson would tell me about my newly developed behaviour.
It was dangerous.
A small mew by my feet alerted me to the fact that Skobeth had awoken and come to find me.
We went to the kitchen to make tea and left the forest to it’s secrets… for now.
