I walked in the woods for a long time today, leaving just before dawn so that I could watch the dawn sun creep up and filter through the leaves and glow up among the roots and moss of the forest floor.
Just before noon I heard a large creature in the thicket scrabbling and digging – like a bird digging in the dust for something tasty to eat.
I was a little fearful of anything that could make that amount of noise, however curiosity won out and began ducking through the leaves and branches to see what could be seen.
A large groaning and cracking set off as something of size began moving through the woods away from me at a considerable speed.
I came to a clearing just as an avian foot the size of a sedan disappeared into the ferns.
I stopped, stunned as the smell of wood smoke permeated the air and a trail of chimney smoke moved through the forest away from me.
What is happening in The Northern Wood?
